Oh how lovely is Lara Croft? So lovely, but not your typical damsel in distress as through the years she has proven that she can handle herself. But this new Tomb Raider, given an early 2013 release date for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii U, will let you understand why Lara Croft became such a lovely heroine.
This time Tomb Raider brings you to an island which Lara Croft crashes upon. Unfortunately this is before Lara Croft became the tough quick witted dual pistol wielding woman we have come to love and admire. She must survive her way through injuries from the crash, freezing weather, starvation, cannibals and of course, some bad guys!
This game has you play and learn different techniques of survival. Almost everything Lara finds on the island can become helpful if used creatively. We saw a great example at the Square Enix demo, which showed Lara finding what was called a pry tool, which was good enough to pry open some doors, but when faced with a rusted crank, she had to explore the jungle island for any scraps or salvaged parts to upgrade her tool. This feature of upgrading your tools will make for some creative problem solving within the game.
Another aspect of survival is making sure you have something to eat. As Man vs Wild host Bear Grylls would say in his Australian accent, “You need to get your minerals and vitamins!” This Tomb Raider allows you to hunt for food and return to what are called, base camps, which are points of rest or checkpoints, which allow Lara to eat and regain her strength.
There is also another added feature resembling a feature in the upcoming Hitman: Absolution, called instinct view, which allows Lara to use her instincts to either find her way back or locate useful items in the environment.
The demo Square Enix showed of this game was nothing short of amazing and I along with CWG can not wait for its release.
